The 8th of March is an important date because the International Women’s Day is celebrated to commemorate both the social, economic and political achievements and the discrimination and violence that women have been and are still the subject of in almost all parts of the world.
In Venice there is the regatta of women on Caorline, of the colorful six-row boats once considered for the exclusive use of men, because their heavy hulls required a strong physical strength and hard training.
This year the race is Sunday, March 11th, between 72 women on 12 brightly coloured caorline boats, with departures at 10.00 behind Sacca Fisola, along the southern edge of the Giudecca, insertion in the canal of San Giorgio, until reaching the basin of San Marco, entrance of the Grand Canal and arrival at the height of the Chiesa della Salute. The awarding of the rowers will take place in the field of health at 11.00 p.m. in the presence of the authorities.
The whole month of March is dedicated to women with a rich and varied program, ranging from painting to music, from sport to health, from cinema to theatre. The event schedule counts 47 events that will be held throughout the city, from Mestre to Lido, from Campalto to the old town via Favaro Veneto, Chirignago and Zelarino.
Take the opportunity to make a nice trip to Venice with some friends to celebrate the Women’s Day! Take advantage of the month of March to tour the islands: Murano, Burano and Torcello.
In the middle of the northern lagoon there are three small jewels each with its own particularity.
Murano is the island of blown glass since, in 1295, the Republic of Venice moved all the furnaces there for fear of possible fires inside the city. Murano has the shape of a small Venice: it is made up of 9 small islands joined by bridges with the Channel in the middle. Burano is the island of lace and even today you can find the old ladies who work on the pillow (wood tool used by lace makers) outside the doors of their home. In addition, Burano has all the facades of the houses very bright and different color: the effect is very impressive.
Torcello is the island of the first settlements of the Venetian people where you can visit the beautiful church of Santa Fosca, one of the few remaining Greek-cross churches of Byzantine influence.
