When we talk about concerts in Piazza San Marco the Pink Floyd comes back to the mind. They took place on a raft anchored in the middle of the basin, in front of the ducal palace and them sound echoed throughout the lagoon.
A concert without comparisons, but organized without particular attention: in a particularly hot summer, thousands of people had poured into the square, standing or sitting on the floor, suspended above the bridges, climbing on the Sansovino columns, tired from the long wait. Many had arrived in the early afternoon to find a place as close as possible to the floating stage. There were not enough toilets, no refreshment points and the closer the hour of the concert the more people crowded in the square.
This kind of things probably are possible in other city, but Venice is a city can not afford it because of its urban structure and its ancient fragility.
Fortunately nothing serious happened, no incident, the concert was unforgettable and people still today remember it as the most beautiful concert of Pink Floyd. The next morning, however, the Piazza San Marco was covered with rubbish and dirt, many, who did not know where to go to sleep, had remained there in their sleeping bags lying on the ground. An indecorous sight for such a fragile and ancient city.
After this experience, Venice did not want to do more shows in Piazza San Marco, but in 2011 STING made a beautiful concert in Piazza, along with the orchestra of Teatro La Fenice and this time the organization was impeccable! Armchairs brought into the space in front of the bell tower, among the procuratie, numbered and booked in advance, so that everyone could enjoy the concert comfortably seated, and the Piazza San Marco was transformed into an open-air theater.
This year, 7 years after Sting, on July 3rd and 4th ZUCCHERO, an important italian singer known in all the world, will play in the most beautiful drawing room in Europe (Piazza san marco), using the same methods used for Sting. An unmissable concert by an artist who has sold over 60,000 records worldwide as well as being the first western artist to have performed at the Kremlin after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Zucchero is also the only Italian artist to have participated in the Woodstock Festival in 1994, to the Freddie Mercury Tribute in 1992 and to all the events of 46664 for Nelson Mandela.
